If you have not already done so, then we recommend that you read our 'step by step' guide on what to do in the event of a death.

What to do when someone dies in hospital

An expected death

When someone passes away in hospital they will normally have to remain in the Hospital's mortuary until the 'Medical Cause of Death Certificate' has been produced and the 'Certificate for Burial or Cremation' (Green Certificate) has been issued by the Registry Office . Where the Hospital has been informed that a Cremation is to take place the 'Cremation Medical Certificate' (Crem 4) would also need to have been completed by the attending Doctor.

An unexpected death

If someone passes away unexpectedly in hospital or the patient has been in hospital for less than 24 hours then the Coroner may become involved. The hospital Bereavement Office will keep you informed of what is being done and how to proceed.
